How We Cultivate Food Sovereignty

At the Jamestown Farmers Market, we believe that supporting local farmers and small businesses goes hand in hand with cultivating food sovereignty in our community. While it’s vital to strengthen our local food economy, we also recognize that many people want the knowledge, skills, and space to grow their own food and care for themselves and their families.

Our community garden plots are one way we help make that possible. Offering access to land, hands-on learning, and shared resources so neighbors can cultivate fresh, healthy food, deepen their connection to the land, and take an active role in their own food security.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Start by filling out our Lakewood Community Garden Interest Form below! While priority is given to returning gardeners, each year there are always a few beds available.

  • Like any garden or green space, there is always work to be done! You can help mow, rake leaves, and help maintain/weed our native flower and garden beds.

Each season, we have a few Mobile Market garden beds where we grow food that go directly to you Mobile Market or to the local soup kitchen. Here is where you can really get some practice! Help weed, water, and cultivate a variety of herbs, flowers, and produce that will feed our community!

  • While we refresh the beds each year with compost and soil, all plants and support structures come from you. Generally, gardeners source their own seeds or starts from their favorite plant store or website.

  • We have a locked shed, and the combo is shared each season with gardeners. Inside there are shovels, rakes, baskets, a small wheelbarrow, hoses, and more all available for you to use. There is a water spigot that is also locked when not in use.
